Playing: 907F howling, recording by NPS and Jeffrey T Reed

Drop your own recording on the viewer, or choose one. It is decoded in your browser and never uploaded. Up to 50 MB (12 MB for MP3, M4A or OGG) or 10 minutes.

How to use it

  1. Pick a recording, then press Play. The newest sound appears on the right.
  2. Drag the view to turn it, and scroll to zoom. The controls under the picture change the frequency range, the colors and the motion.
  3. Drop your own recording on the viewer, or press “Choose a file”. It is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.
  4. “Export” saves the animation, with its sound, as a video.

What you are seeing

The front ridges are low notes and the back ridges are high ones. A howl draws a long, smooth ridge; its harmonics draw fainter copies further back. Barks and yips are short, steep peaks, and a chorus fills the landscape with ridges that cross and overlap.

The player is the 3D spectrogram engine from GrizCam Desktop, the software used to study these recordings. It works on laptops and desktops; on a phone, open this page on a larger screen to play it.
